Great Bear Heli-Skiing

Set deep in British Columbia’s Central Coast Mountains, approximately 50 km north of Bella Coola,  Great Bear offers a unique combination of huge alpine terrain, deep coastal snow and remarkably reliable access to skiing in changing weather.

The operation grew from nearly 60 years of guiding anglers on the legendary Dean River before expanding into the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Heli-skiing began in February 2022, and in just a few seasons guests have already logged 132 first descents and explored more than 1,250 square kilometres of an enormous 6,250-square-kilometre tenure. With so much terrain still unexplored, the potential for new lines and first descents remains one of the things that makes skiing here particularly exciting.

The Terrain

The lodge sits just above sea level on the Dean River in an ideal position between two very different mountain environments. On clear days, the helicopter heads west into the heart of the Coast Mountains, accessing big glaciers, expansive alpine terrain, long descents and a deep coastal snowpack. Some runs offer spectacular views all the way to Dean Channel and the Pacific Coast, while the longest descent skied so far drops more than 1,600 vertical metres (5,200 feet).

When coastal storms move in, the operation can head east toward the cooler and relatively drier Chilcotin side of the range. Here, naturally gladed forests provide excellent storm-day powder skiing and better visibility, with quality tree skiing available within a five-minute flight of the lodge.

That ability to move east or west depending on conditions is a major advantage. Since opening, the operation reports skiing on 88% of operating days, averaging fewer than one weather day per week.

Snow & Skiing

This is a serious coastal snow environment, receiving more than 20 metres (65 feet) of snowfall annually. The combination of deep snow, glaciers, alpine bowls, long fall-line descents and sheltered tree skiing creates a surprisingly diverse tenure suitable for a range of strong intermediate through expert skiers and riders.

Small-group semi-private, private and exclusive lodge packages are available, and packages include unlimited vertical. There are no additional vertical charges at the end of the trip, allowing the program to take full advantage of good weather and conditions.

The Lodge

Despite the remote setting, getting here is relatively straightforward. Guests travel to Vancouver International Airport, with the remaining logistics handled as part of the program.

The lodge has been welcoming guests to the Dean River for more than 35 years and brings decades of hospitality experience to the heli-ski operation. Comfortable accommodation, excellent food and a relaxed lodge atmosphere complement what is ultimately a very remote wilderness ski experience.

For us, the real attraction of Dean River is the combination of massive terrain, deep snow, small groups and the ability to keep skiing when coastal weather shuts down more exposed alpine terrain. Add in the opportunity to explore a relatively new heli-ski tenure where first descents are still a regular occurrence, and it becomes one of the more interesting heli-ski destinations on the BC coast.
